Criminal Coffee Roasters make the A-List in its opening Week

Peaky Blinders fans, eat your heart out; the Sunshine Coast just got a brand new cafe and it’s totally up your alley.

Criminal Coffee Co. will officially open its doors in Maroochydore this Friday, inviting caffeine addicts to sip on house-roasted brews—espresso, cold drip or pour over—in one of the coolest fit-outs to hit our region in 2019. And we’re not exaggerating.

The handiwork of husband-and-wife duo, Rachel and Danny Simmonds (who’s funnily enough from Birmingham himself) the space was completely gutted and rebuilt in nine filled-to-the-brim months. And now, you get to reap the rewards.

Step inside, and the first thing you’ll notice beyond the size of this cafe, is the elaborate, dusty pink pressed tin espresso bar, lit by industrial-style pendants and backed by brick archways. It’s eye-catching and sets the whole tone for a Criminal Coffee experience.

Then, you’ll be pulled to the dark timber chairs, exposed rafters, polished concrete floors, sleek Chesterfield couch and, of course, the olive subway tiles that line the walls throughout. It doesn’t feel like the Sunshine Coast, and we’re loving the escape.

The premises itself has been cleverly split, and includes the cafe, a glass-walled roastery which you can view in action whilst you down your piccolo, and a co-work space and boardroom. They latter of which is available for hire, complete with a free coffee every morning. Sounds epic, eh?

It’s not just the interior or the super smooth coffee that’s worth getting excited about though.  These guys are toastie specialists and you’re going to want to devour one of their five, cheese-heavy creations immediately.

Hitting their toastie iron in the open kitchen, you’ll find the likes of a macaroni, Parmesan and aged cheddar combo, the Brisket—loaded with six hour slow-cooked brisket, drizzled with in-house mustard mayo, Red Leicester and sauerkraut, and the Padre—a pulled chicken, rocket, roasted capsicum, cheddar, mozzarella and pickled jalapenos. Drool.

For the vegans, you’re going to want to try the Grounded, featuring roasted zucchini, dukkah, basil, vine ripe tomatoes and melted vegan cheese. And for the early-morning risers and tradies, Criminal offer a weekday special (from 5.30am to 10am) of a delicious slow-cooked ham off the bone, double cheese and house tomato relish toastie with a free coffee.

Still hungry? There’s also a Macbowl, filled with, you guessed it, housemade macaroni, jalapenos, gooey cheddar cheese and toasted panko. Whether you grab a seat inside, or out, it’s a given that you’ll be blissing out on the vibes, while chowing down on some of the most stomach-warming food you’ll ever taste.

Now open Monday to Friday from 5.30am to 2.30pm and weekends from 6.30am to 2.30pm, Criminal Coffee Co. is the new joint you won’t be able to live without.
